Our speaker was Suzanne Koessler an outreach worker; she discussed with our
members the Youth Gambling Prevention Program.
This program is to inform youth of issues dealing with gambling the good and
bad. The program is Province wide; and is funded by the Ministry of Health and
Long Term Care, it started in 2000. The program is brought to the youth through
presentations at schools. The program offers community awareness, educational
information to parents, teachers and youth. They also have information for
gambling treatment services.
The goals of the program are to give youth an awareness of gambling and to learn
early indicators of youth gambling. The program targets youth 8 years old to 24
years old and teach them about potential risks with gambling. The program gives
the youth ways to make informed choices regarding gambling and to stay safe.
Gambling means risking something of value on an element of chance and is
associated with an outcome. Different activities that are consider gambling are
lottery tickets, slots, bingo, sport betting, cards, bets ort dares, plus many
more. The program is gambling neutral and shows both sides of gambling. This
generation is influenced by adverting and ads on TV. that promotes gambling.
Gambling can become addictive, and can create conflict in families. Some things
like fundraising can be a positive of gambling. Some signs of problem gambling
are spending too much money, losing interest in other activities that once you
cared about, school or work suffers because you are spending too much time
gambling, and lying or stealing.
Suzanne’s presentation was a wonderful and the discussion was appreciated by all
members in the group.
Our next meeting is December 5th for our Christmas party. Our meeting in the New
Year is January 16th2006 which will have a presentation on car care and
maintenance. All are welcome.
CFUW Kincardine met on Monday, October 17 in the
library at KDSS. Beth Haynes, our Ontario
Southwest Regional Director and liaison with the national group, was here to
make two Special Project Awards presentations. The first Special Project
Award was for the Calendar Girls. The calendar was a success and twenty
thousand dollars was raised. Half of the funds went into our Bursary Trust
Fund in support of a bursary to assist a mature woman going back to continue
her education. The other half was presented to the Multiple Sclerosis
Society. Sylvia and Marilyn accepted the certificate.

The second Special Project Award was in recognition of the thirty percent increase in our membership. Sandra accepted the certificate.
Sandra MacDonald, our guest speaker for the evening and one of our members, discussed and demonstrated a variety of water colour techniques. Her interest in water colours started years ago as she liked the medium. She has taken courses at the Southampton School for the Arts and Georgian College and currently some of her work is on display at the Victoria Park Gallery. After discussing types of paper and handling some samples Sandra talked about texture, types of paint and brushes and their uses. Some of her framed works were on view to highlight the discussion and demonstration. It was a very informative evening.
Our next meeting is on Monday, November 21 in the library at KDSS. Guest speaker Suzanne Koessler will discuss youth gambling prevention.
